Anette Olzon viveu na música, com a música e para a música.

No início cantou com a mãe em sua banda, posteriormente, entrou para a banda Alyson Avenue e chegou a cantar num grupo que fazia covers de seus conterrâneos do ABBA.

Em 2007 ela surgiu para o mundo como a nova frontwoman do Nightwish, em decorrência da demissão de sua antecessora, Tarja Turunen.

Por lá ficou e se destacou por mais de cinco anos, tendo gravado dois álbuns de estúdio com os finlandeses, “Dark Passion Play” (2007) e “Imaginaerum” (2011).

Após sua passagem pelo Nightwish, ela lançou o álbuns solo “Shine” (2014) e o EP “Vintersjäl / Cold Outside” (2016).

Até se unir musicalmente com o guitarrista finlandês Jani Liimatainen e formarem a sua nova banda, The Dark Element, que estreou em 2016 com seu álbum intitulado e já encaminha o segundo.

Canceriana, casada com o baixista e vocalista Johan Husgafvel desde 2013, mãe de três filhos e conciliando a agenda do The Dark Element com o curso de enfermagem, a mezzo soprano Anette Olzon gentilmente concedeu essa entrevista exclusiva à Confraria Floydstock, que você pode começar a ler nas linhas abaixo:

1 – Como você começou sua história com música?

Eu sempre amei música e, desde criança, a música estava em minha casa o tempo todo. Minha mãe e meu padrasto tocaram em bandas e eu ouvi isso o tempo todo e o lado da família de toda a minha mãe é de músicos de maneiras diferentes. Então, em uma idade muito jovem, eu cantava o tempo todo e sempre foi meu sonho ser cantora. Eu comecei cedo cantando na banda banda de mamãe, participando de shows de talentos e tendo aulas de canto, depois de entrar para a minha primeira banda aos 16 anos de idade.

2 – Você cantou na banda cover do ABBA, um dos maiores expoentes da música sueca. Como foi essa época? Isso foi legal?

Foi um tempo antes de me juntar ao Nightwish. Foi divertido, mas também muito difícil porque as canções do ABBA não são fáceis de cantar ou tocar ao vivo. Mas eu adorava ser a Agnetha no palco, já que com o ABBA, eu meio que comecei a cantar na minha sala de estar. Meu primeiro álbum, que comprei com o meu próprio dinheiro, foi o álbum “The Arrival”, do ABBA.

3 – Podemos dizer que sua contribuição para a banda Alyson Avenue foi dupla: primeiro sendo uma grande cantora que se encaixou e alavancou o grupo, e então, quando você assumia como vocalista do Nightwish, a venda de discos do Alyson Avenue disparou. Como foi essa fase?

Foi divertido e foi desde o início apenas planejado para eu me juntar a eles no estúdio colocando alguns vocais de fundo para a banda. Mas eles gostaram tanto da minha voz que eu me juntei e eu e o cantor masculino dividimos os vocais por um tempo antes que eles escolhessem apenas me ter pelo microfone.

4 – O líder do Nightwish Tuomas Holopainen selecionou você para a banda de cerca de 2.000 candidatos. Qual você acha que foi o seu grande diferencial que fez você escolher?

É muito difícil dizer, mas provavelmente minha personalidade e voz. Nós nos encaixamos muito bem e isso foi importante para eles, é claro.

5 – Seu primeiro álbum com o Nightwish em 2007, “Dark Passion Play”, já começa com a super música “The Poet e o Pendulum“, uma dos melhores da banda e onde você teve uma performance maravilhosa, no estúdio e especialmente ao vivo. Você concorda que nesta música você teve uma de suas melhores performances na banda? Que outras músicas desta fase da sua carreira você destacaria?

Obrigado por essas palavras amáveis em primeiro lugar; Eu gosto muito da música, é ótima, mas para mim não é tão especial quando se trata de meus vocais. Eu acredito que há outras músicas que eram melhores, embora seja uma música legal, mas pessoalmente minhas favoritas desse álbum são, por exemplo, “Sahara”, “Meadows Of Heaven” e “Eva”. E uma que não fez o álbum, mas é uma das melhores músicas que já fizemos é “Escapist”. Ela realmente deveria integrar esse álbum.

6 – Agora vamos começar a falar sobre The Dark Element, sua banda desde 2016 … No primeiro álbum, auto-intitulado, sentimos uma certa semelhança com o power metal sinfônico que você fez na sua fase do Nightwish. Quais são as principais semelhanças e diferenças que você destacaria?

Bem, isso não foi feito para ser parecido, já que Jani, que faz as músicas, não ouviu tanto o Nightwish. Eu acredito que são apenas algumas músicas e elementos que têm semelhanças e que é a música sinfônica, mas uma diferença é que Jani escreve melodias mais cativantes e também usa teclados dos anos 80, por exemplo. E as músicas são menos longas e, como devo dizer, mais fáceis de ouvir. Também no Nightwish os vocais foram empurrados para trás para soar como os outros instrumentos e orquestra, enquanto nós no Dark Element temos os vocais na frente e a principal coisa a ser ouvida. Eu, pelo menos, prefiro assim.

7 – O segundo álbum do The Dark Element já está sendo feito. Já tem data de lançamento do título?

Temos uma data para a entrega, mas não a data de lançamento definida e nenhum título ainda.

8 – Você pode adiantar as diferenças deste álbum em relação ao primeiro?

É no mesmo caminho, mas também com alguns novos elementos e sons. Haverá surpresas com certeza.

9 – A banda já se apresentou ao redor do mundo. Recentemente você tocou no Japão. Como o público reagiu às novas músicas?

Eles pareciam realmente gostar delas e foi ótimo ver as multidões e suas reações positivas.

10 – Podemos ter o The Dark Element tocando aqui no Brasil em breve?

Nós não vamos fazer turnês e tocar ao muito vivo, então temos que ver, mas se conseguirmos boas ofertas, poderemos ir no futuro.

Firstly, I would like to thank you immensely for giving this interview to the Confraria Floydstock.

1 – How did you start your story with music?

I have always loved music and ever since I was a little child music was in my home all the time. My mother and my stepfather both played in bands and I heard it all the time and my whole mother’s families side is musicians in different ways. So at a very young age I sang all the time and it has always been my dream to be a singer.  I started early with singing in my mums band, entering talent shows and taking vocal lessons followed by joining my first band at 16 years of age. 

2 – As a teenager you sang in ABBA’s cover band, one of the greatest exponents of Swedish music. How was that season? It was cool? 

This was actually not in my teens but a while before I joined Nightwish. It was fun but also very hard cause Abbas songs are not easy to sing or perform live. But I loved to be Agneta on stage since it was with abba I kinda started singing in my living room. My very first album I bought for my own money was Abbas album The arrival.

3 – We can say that her contribution to the band Alyson Avenue was twofold: first being a great singer who fit in and leveraged or group, and then, when you took over as   vocalist, driving off record sales on Alyson Avenue. How was that phase?

It was fun and it was from the start only planned for me to join them in the studio putting down some background vocals for the band. But they liked my voice so much that I joined and me and the male singer shared the vocals for a while before they chose to only have me by the microphone. 

4 – Nightwish leader Tuomas Holopainen selected you for the band from about 2,000 candidates. What do you think was your big differential that made you choose it?

Very hard to say but probably my personality and voice. We clicked very well and that was important for them of course.

5 – Your first albumt with Nightwish in 2007, “Dark Passion Play”, already begins with the super songThe Poet and the Pendulum”, one of the best in the band and where you had a wonderful performance, in the studio and especially live. Do you agree that in this song you had one of your best performances in the band? What other songs from this stage of your career would you highlight?

Thanks for such kind words first of all;-) I like the song a lot and it’s really nice but for me it’s not so special when it comes to my vocals. I believe there are other songs that were better although it is a nice song, but personally my favorites from that album are for instance Sahara, meadows of heaven and Eva. And one that didn’t make the album but is one of the best songs we ever did is Escapist. It really should had been in that album.

6 – Now let’s start talking about The Dark Element, your band since 2016 … On the first album, self-titled, we feel a certain similarity to the symphonic power metal you made in your Nightwish phase. What are the main similarities and dissimilarities that you would highlight?

Well it’s not made to be similar since Jani who makes the songs haven’t listened that much to nightwish. I believe it’s only some songs and elements that have similarities and then it’s that it’s symphonic music but one difference is that jani writes much catchier melodies and also uses 80s keys for instance. And the songs are less long and as I must say- easier to listen to. Also in nightwish the vocals were pushed back to sound like the other instruments and orchestra, whereas we in the dark element have the vocals up front and the main thing to be heard. I for one prefer it this way.

7 – The second album from The Dark Element is already lbeing made. Does it already have title al release date?

We have a date for the delivery of the master but not the set release date and no title yet.

8 – Can you advance any differences from this album over the first?
It’s in the same vain but also with some new elements and sounds. There will be surprises for sure.

9 – The band has performed around the world. Recently you played in Japan. How has the audience been reacting to the new songs?

They seemed to really like them and it felt great to see the crowds and their positive reactions.

10 – Can we have The Dark Element playing here in Brazil anytime soon?

We won’t tour and play live so much so we have to see but if we get good offers we might come over in the future.
