Ela é uma espetacular cantora operística, que mergulhara no metal, tendo integrado as bandas Mortemia, Trail of Tears, Penumbra e Turisas, até ser chamada em setembro de 2015 para assumir o microfone da banda nórdica Sirenia, substituindo a cantora Aylin.

Após lançar 2 ótimos álbuns com o Sirenia, “Dim Days of Dolor” (2016) e “Arcane Astral Aeons” (2018) (Resenha AQUI), a mezzo-soprano francesa vem mostrando porque hoje é uma das melhores cantoras do gothic e symphonic metal.

Agora, ela gentilmente aceitou conceder esta entrevista exclusiva à Confraria Floydstock, que você pode conferir nas linhas abaixo, em português e inglês.

1 – Como a música entrou na sua vida?

Meu pai tocava violão e piano o tempo todo em casa, fazer música e cantar juntos sempre fez parte da nossa rotina diária. Aprendi a tocar piano quando era criança, e formei minha primeira banda aos 14, começando a compor algumas músicas. A música foi desde cedo minha principal preocupação.

2 – Você passou quatro anos no Conservatório de Aix-en-Provence, especializando-se em canto lírico e música erudita, correto? Como essa trajetória musical aconteceu até chegar ao metal?

Quando vim para o Conservatório, tinha uma banda de rock/pop e queria aprender técnica vocal de uma forma «séria»; mas a turma de canto de estilo moderno estava lotada naquele ano, e a única turma que queria me testar era clássica/lírica.

Não tinha a menor ideia do que era Ópera, me preparei para a audição, passei na competição e finalmente passei 4 anos estudando antes de começar uma carreira clássica inesperada, mas emocionante.

Ganhei competições, tive oportunidades e compromissos, e acabou por se tornar o meu trabalho principal, afastando-me pela força das circunstâncias do palco de rock.

Mas um estúdio norueguês, baseado em Marselha, (Terje Refsnes Sound suite studios) estava sempre procurando vozes para gravações de metal: foi assim que comecei a colaborar em projetos de metal, gravações para bandas como Turisas, Trail of Tears, Penumbra e Sirenia.

Eu conheci o Morten (Veland – fundador,líder e multi-instrumentista do Sirenia) em 2003, e ele me convidou para gravar em todos os álbuns desde então.

3 – Como aconteceu o convite para ingressar no Sirenia? Você esperava ou foi uma surpresa?

Em 2016, logo após terminarmos as gravações do coral para “Dim Days of Dolor”, o Morten me perguntou se eu estava bem para substituir Ailyn que estava doente para um show algumas semanas depois.

O Morten foi meu amigo por tantos anos, e eu aceitei ajudar mesmo que o tempo fosse curto para eu aprender as músicas, e foi estressante porque eu não estive em um palco de rock por muito tempo …

Eu sabia que a situação com Ailyn era complicada, que eles tiveram que cancelar vários shows nos últimos 3 anos, mas eu não poderia esperar que o Morten me pedisse para me tornar oficialmente a nova vocalista alguns dias depois do show.

Eu tinha meus projetos clássicos, e ingressar em uma banda de metal não estava realmente nos planos naquele momento … Mas em algum lugar no meu coração, eu sabia que era uma espécie de sinal do universo, sabe; talvez tenha sido um ótimo momento para voltar às minhas primeiras escolhas para me sentir completamente feliz na minha vida de cantora 😉

4 – Como você sentiu a reação do público ao seu trabalho? Houve alguma dificuldade, como comparações com a cantora anterior ou deu tudo certo?

Isso não foi fácil, com certeza. Substituir alguém é uma situação delicada. Pode ser perturbador para os fãs acostumados a uma voz, a uma personalidade, o que é totalmente compreensível.

Mesmo tendo trabalhado tantos anos com a banda, para algumas pessoas era inaceitável ver a cantora do coro virar a vocalista.

Algumas pessoas reagiram violentamente contra mim e o Morten, recebemos ódio e ameaças, mas a maioria dos fãs conhecia a situação e compreendeu perfeitamente que era inevitável.

A banda perdeu alguns fãs com a mudança de vocalista, mas também ganhou muitos novos.

Demorou para convencer as pessoas, para atingir sua confiança.

Mas depois de quase 5 anos, nós construímos muito e as coisas mudaram de uma forma muito boa e positiva.

5 – Assim que você entrou, o som do Sirenia mudou muito, ficando mais consistente, pesado e complexo, gerando mais riqueza musical. Você acha que sua voz e estilo de canto facilitaram esse processo?

A inspiração do Morten está se movendo e evoluindo o tempo todo, ele está sempre explorando novos horizontes e possibilidades em sua música, cada álbum nunca se parece com o anterior e ele nunca perde a identidade reconhecível do Sirenia.

Acho que suas composições levam em consideração a cor da voz do vocalista e as possibilidades no processo criativo; Ailyn tem uma bela voz aguda e natural, a minha é mais sombria e talvez mais poderosa, temos universos extremamente diferentes, e ele soube revelar cada um deles, no seu próprio estilo, através das suas canções. Ele sabe como fazer um álbum se encaixar na voz da vocalista.

6 – Você já gravou 2 álbuns com o Sirenia, “Dim Days of Dolor” e “Arcane Astral Aeons”, este último, muitas vezes apontado como o melhor da carreira do grupo. Como foi seu envolvimento na parte de criação da obra?

O Morten está criando 99,9% dos álbuns, já que ele escreve, compõe e faz os arranjos das músicas, mas eu escrevi as letras em francês em «Nos heures sombres» e fiz as traduções em francês das letras do Morten em «Aeons embrace».

7 – Ainda em relação à questão anterior, você se sente confortável dentro da banda para expor suas ideias sobre as criações e caminhos percorridos pelo grupo?

Sim, temos a oportunidade de todos termos um excelente relacionamento e podermos conversar abertamente e compartilhar nossas opiniões, pontos de vista, caminhos a seguir sobre as músicas e projetos da banda. 

8 – Hoje temos cada vez mais mulheres, tanto na frente do microfone quanto como instrumentistas de bandas de rock e metal. O que você aconselharia a uma jovem fã que aspira começar e ter sucesso como cantora nos estúdios e no palco?

Provavelmente antes de tudo: trabalhar. Ensaiando, explorando suas possibilidades de voz em experimentar diferentes estilos, aprendendo diferentes técnicas… Cuide todos os dias do seu instrumento que é extremamente frágil, tenha prazer em cantar, seja generosa e humilde, acredite em você mesma, esteja aberta à crítica para evoluir, mas nunca para ouvir comentários não construtivos e mal intencionados 😉

9 – Quais cantores (as) em geral te inspiraram mais? E quais especialmente dentro do metal gótico e sinfônico?

Não posso dizer que me inspiro mais neste ou naquele vocalista, é uma mistura de muitas referências que alimentam a minha inspiração.

Gosto de ouvir e explorar diferentes estilos vocais, em todos os gêneros.

A voz é fascinante, pode ter muitas facetas. Adoro vozes ricas e emocionais como Amy Lee e Joseph Duplantier, poderosas no metal, mas também adoro a versatilidade de Freddie Mercury no pop, a forma como Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan usa sua voz na world music, a cor de Diannes Reeves no jazz, a singular voz de Björk, a incrível voz da Ópera de Montserrat Caballe, as vozes tradicionais búlgaras me dão arrepios de emoção o tempo todo … etc … Acho que ter um monte de referências diferentes abre possibilidades e também evita imitar inconscientemente um ídolo inspirador.

10 – Quais são seus planos futuros como artista e com a banda? Um novo álbum à vista? Você pode nos contar alguma coisa?

Estamos terminando nosso novo álbum, ajustando a mixagem final agora.

Deve ser lançado no início de 2021.

Será diferente dos anteriores, nova energia, nova atmosfera, novas inspirações 😉

A situação atual do Covid não nos permite planejar turnês com certeza no futuro próximo, mas tenha certeza de que estamos trabalhando duro para deixar tudo pronto para quando a situação estiver evoluindo da maneira certa! Estamos mais animados do que nunca! 🙂

She is a spectacular opera singer, who had immersed herself in metal, having joined the bands Mortemia, Trail of Tears, Penumbra and Turisas, until she was called in September 2015 to take over the microphone of the Nordic band Sirenia, replacing the singer Aylin.

After releasing 2 great albums with Sirenia, “Dim Days of Dolor” (2016) and “Arcane Astral Aeons” (2018) (Review HERE), the French mezzo-soprano has been showing why today she is one of the best singers of gothic and symphonic metal.

Now, she kindly accepted to grant this exclusive interview to the Confraria Floydstock, which you can check in the lines below, in Portuguese and English

1 – How did the music come into your life?

My father was playing guitar and piano all the time at home, making music and singing together has always been in our daily routine. I learned to play the piano when I was a kid, and formed my first band at 14, beginning to compose some songs. Music has been early my main concern.

2 – You did spend four years at the Conservatories of Aix-en-Provence, specializing in lyrical singing and classical music, correct? How did this musical trajectory happen until it reached metal?

When I came to the Conservatory, I had a rock/pop band and I wanted to learn vocal technic in a « serious » way; but the modern style singing class was full this year, and the only class that wanted to audition me was classical/lyrical.

I had no idea at this moment about what Opera was, I prepared myself for the audition, I passed the competition,  and finally spend 4 years studiying before beginning an unexpected but exciting classical carrier. 

I won competitions, had opportunities and engagements, and it finally became my main job, moving away by force of circumstances far from the rock stage.

But a Norwegian studio, based in Marseille, (Terje Refsnes Sound suite studios) was often looking for voices for metal recordings: That’s how I began to collaborate on metal projects, recordings for  bands like Turisas, Trail of Tears, Penumbra, and Sirenia.

I met Morten in 2003, and he invited me to record on every album since this time.

3 – How did the invitation to join Sirenia happen? Did you expect it or was it a surprise?

In 2016, just after we finish the choir recordings for Dim Days of Dolor, Morten asked me if I was ok to replace Ailyn who was sick for a show some weeks later.

Morten was a friend for so many years, and I accepted to help even if the timing was short for me to learn the songs, and it was stressing because I haven’t been on a rock stage for so long…

I knew that the situation with Ailyn was complicated, that they had to cancel a lots of shows on the last 3 years, but I absolutely couldn’t expect Morten would ask me to become officially the new lead singer some days after the show.

I had my classical projects, and joining a metal band was not really in the plans at this moment… But somewhere in my heart, I knew that was a kind of universe sign you know; maybe it was great time to be back to my first choices to feel completely happy in my singer life 😉 

4 – How did you feel the public’s reaction to your entry? Were there any difficulties, like comparisons with the previous singer or everything went ok?

That was not easy for sure. Replacing someone is a delicate situation. It can be disturbing for the fans who are used to a voice, to a personnality, which is totally understandable. 

Even if I worked for so many years with the band, for some people it was unacceptable to see the choir singer becoming the frontwoman.

Some peole reacted violently against Morten and me, we received hatred and threat attacks, but most of the fans knew the situation and perfectly understood it was unavoidable.

The band lost some fans with the singer changing, but it also gained a lot of new ones.

It took time to convince people, to reach their confidence and trust.

But after almost 5 years now, we have built a lot and things changed in a very nice and positive way.

5 – As you entered, Sirenia’s sound has changed a lot, becoming more consistent, heavy and complex, generating more musical wealth. Do you think your voice and singing style facilitated this process?

Morten’s inspiration is moving and evolving all the time, he’s always exploring new horizons and possibilities in his music, every album never looklikes the previous one while he never loses his Sirenia’s recognizable identity.

I think his compositions take into accounts the singer’s voice color and possibilities in the creative process; Ailyn has a beautiful high and breathing voice, mine is darker and maybe more powerful, we have extremely different universes, and he knew how to reveal each of them, in their own style, through his songs. He knows how to make an album fit with the singer’s voice.

6 – You have already recorded 2 albums with Sirenia, “Dim Days of Dolor” and “Arcane Astral Aeons”, the latter, often pointed out as the best of the group’s career. How was your involvement in the work’s creation part?

Morten is creating 99,9% of the albums, as he writes, composes and arranges the songs, but I wrote the French lyrics on « Nos heures sombres » and did the French translations of Morten’s lyrics on « Aeons embrace ».

7 – Still regarding the previous question, do you feel comfortable within the band to expose your ideas about the creations and paths followed by the group?

Yes, we have the chance that we all have excellent relationships and we can talk openly and share our opinions, points of views, paths to follow about the songs and band projects. 

8 – Today we have more and more women, both in front of the microphone and as instrumentalists in rock and metal bands. What would you advise a young girl, a fan, who aspires to start and succeed as a singer in the studios and on stage?

Probably before everything: working. Rehearsing, exploring your voice possibilities in trying different styles, learning different technics…Take care every day of your instrument that is extremely fragile, have pleasure in singing, be generous and humble, believe in yourself, be opened to criticism to evolve,  but never listen to unconstructive and bad intentioned comments 😉

9 – Which singers in general inspired you the most? And which ones especially within gothic and symphonic metal?

I can’t say that I am inspired the most by this or this singer, it’s a mix of a lot of references that nourrish my inspiration.

I like to listen and explore different vocal styles, in every genre. 

Voice is fascinating, it can have so many facets. I love rich and emotional voices like Amy Lee and Joseph Duplantier powerful one in metal, but I also love Freddie Mercury’s versatility in Pop, the way Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan uses his voice in world music, the color of Diannes Reeves in jazz, the singular voice of Björk, the amazing Opera voice of Montserrat Caballe, the traditional Bulgarian voices give me gosebumps all the time…etc… I think having a lot of different references opens possibilities and it also avoids to imitate unconsciously an inspirating idol. 

10 – What are your future plans as an artist and with the band? A new album in sight? Something you can tell us?

We are finishing our brand new album, tweaking on the final mix right now. 

It may be out in early 2021.

It will be different from the previous ones, new energy, new athosphere, new inspirations 😉

The actual covid situation doesn’t allow us to plan tours with certainty in the very next future, but be sure that we are working hard on it to make everything ready when the situation is evolving in the right way! We are excited more than ever! 🙂
