O compositor e multi-instrumentista neerlandês Arjen Lucassen é hoje um verdadeiro “papa” do prog e metal europeu, principalmente a bordo de seu principal projeto, o Ayreon, a sua “nave-mãe” como ele mesmo definira na entrevista que você lerá mais abaixo.

Na resenha sobre o CD/DVD que trouxera o registro do espetáculo “Best of Ayreon Live“, o comparei ao ilustre Quincy Jones, o chamando de “Quincy Jones do metal europeu”, por conseguir reunir em torno de sí os maiores nomes do rock progressivo e metal europeu de ontem e de hoje, o que o deixara lisonjeado.

Prestes a realizar mais um feito em sua carreira, o espetáculo Electric Cast Live, em apresentações que ocorrerão no 013 Poppodium em Tilburg Holanda nos dias 13,14 e 15 de setembro de 2019, sendo que na noite do dia 15 haverá “rodada dupla”, com dois shows seguidos, o anfitrião Arjen Lucassen, um verdadeiro gentleman holandês, com toda a sua humildade, concedera uma entrevista exclusiva, que você pode ler em português e inglês nas linhas abaixo.

Primeiramente, obrigado por conceder esta entrevista para a Confraria Floydstock. É nossa honra entrevistá-lo.

O prazer é todo meu.

1 – Em nosso primeiro contato, você disse que o ‘Floyd’ (de André Floyd) foi a chave para convencê-lo a conceder essa entrevista (risos).

Oh sim, definitivamente!

Em seu álbum “Strange Hobby“, você toca os dois primeiros sucessos do Pink Floyd: “Arnold Layne” e “See Emily Play“, ambos de Syd Barrett. Qual o tamanho da influência de Barrett e Pink Floyd na sua carreira?

Imenso! Além dos Beatles, o Floyd é minha maior influência e inspiração. Hmm .. às vezes talvez até um pouco óbvio, haha! Eu também fiz uma versão cover de “Welcome to the Machine” no meu álbum solo “Lost in the New Real“.

2 – Como nasceu a ideia de montar os projetos Ayreon?

Eu sempre quis fazer uma ópera rock, desde que ouvi “Jesus Christ Superstar” e “Tommy” quando criança. Eu amo música com uma história que adiciona uma dimensão extra. Eu também estava cansado de viajar pelo mundo com várias bandas de rock e fazer uma ópera rock  permitiu que me concentrasse em trabalhar no estúdio sem ter que tocar ao vivo. Eu nunca ousei imaginar que seria tão bem sucedido!

Que semelhanças e diferenças existem entre os outros projetos seus, como o Ambeon e o Star One, que você poderia destacar?

Ayreon é a nave-mãe. Ele contém todos os estilos de música que eu gosto, praticamente não há limites. Mas quando faço um projeto paralelo, eu me limito apenas a um desses estilos. Como com Star One, eu me concentro no lado metal de Ayreon, com Gentle Storm eu me concentro no lado folk e com Ambeon eu me concentro no lado atmosférico de Ayreon.

3 – Em nossa resenha do espetáculo “Ayreon Universe: Best of Ayreon Live“, fiz uma analogia entre você e o grande produtor musical dos anos 70 e 80, Quincy Jones, que tinha a grande virtude de conseguir trabalhar juntamente com uma vasta gama dos maiores artistas mundiais, inclusive reunindo-os.

Uau … obrigado pelo grande elogio! Quincy Jones é uma lenda, certamente.

Você tem feito isso constantemente desde o início de seus lançamentos de álbuns, convidando com sucesso nomes de peso ​​do metal e do prog europeu de hoje e de ontem, como Bruce Dickinson, Thijs van Leer, Anneke van Giersbergen, Floor Jansen, Simone Simons, etc.
Como é ser o “Quincy Jones do Metal Europeu”, lidando com tantos artistas, agendas e egos diferentes e sempre sendo capaz de registrá-los?

O lado logístico disso é horrível, eu odeio fazer isso! Mas … uma vez que o artista está no meu estúdio, tudo valeu a pena 🙂 É uma grande honra e uma congratulação para mim que esses músicos incríveis tenham tempo para trabalhar comigo.

4 – Marcela Bovio mencionou, em entrevista à Confraria Floydstock, como foi incrível participar do show “Best of Ayreon Live“. Vocês têm trabalhado juntos desde o começo da banda Stream of Passion em 2004. Como vocês se uniram profissionalmente?

Para o álbum “Human Equation” eu montei um concurso onde um fã desconhecido poderia cantar no meu álbum. De 200 cantores escolhi Marcela. Quando gravamos juntos, foi uma experiência tão maravilhosa, que decidi fazer um álbum inteiro com ela. Originalmente, era para ser um álbum solo para ela, mas lentamente se transformou em uma banda completa: Stream of Passion. Desde então, trabalhei muito com ela e continuarei fazendo isso!

5 – Como foi o processo do show “Best of Ayreon Live“, desde a semente da sua ideia inicial até o último aplauso e o sentimento de missão cumprida, com tudo sendo um enorme sucesso? Havia muitos obstáculos no caminho? Quais foram os maiores?

Começamos a trabalhar nisso com pelo menos dois anos de antecedência. Principalmente para evitar esses obstáculos e resolvê-los lentamente ao longo do tempo. Basicamente, Joost van den Broek (o tecladista) fez tudo isso se tornar uma realidade, sem ele não haveria um show. Eu arranjei principalmente o lado de música e cantores disso tudo, e Joost o lado logístico e técnico.

6 – No álbum “The Theory of Everything” (2013), você recebeu o “presente” de trabalhar no mesmo álbum com dois magos tecladistas da história do rock progressivo, Rick Wakeman e Keith Emerson, além do ainda virtuoso guitarrista Steve Hackett, ex-Genesis e John Wetton (Asia, King Crimson). O que você pode dizer de tal experiência?

É claro que é um grande sonho ter os membros do Big Prog Four: ELP, Yes, Genesis e King Crimson … no mesmo álbum! Se você tivesse me dito isso quando eu era criança, ouvindo a música deles, eu teria rido de você …com força!

7 – No vindouro show “Electric Castle Live“, a cantora Dianne van Giersbergen, que está confirmada no cast, disse à Confraria Floydstock que o convite dela foi devido ao fato de você ter amado o EP “Chapter 1: Anne Boleyn”, da Ex-Libris. Conte-nos sobre isso. …

Dianne é uma cantora incrível, muito poderosa. Eu a assisti ao vivo uma vez com muitos outros cantores, e ela impressionou todos eles! E a mim também 🙂 Ela também é uma mulher muito simpática, o que é sempre muito importante para mim.

8 – Há mais nomes confirmados para este show ou outros possíveis que você possa nos informar com antecedência?

9 – Podemos esperar concertos Ayreon fora da Holanda, talvez uma turnê européia ou mesmo uma cruzando o Atlântico?

Não, isso não é uma opção. Desculpas a todos! Eu sou um recluso total e não faço turnê nem viajo. Também seria financeiramente e logisticamente impossível, a equipe do Ayreon é um elenco de cerca de 100 pessoas.

10 – Quanto ao futuro, você tem algum projeto já planejado ou em andamento para nos contar?

Oh sim! Mas desculpe, é cedo demais para falar sobre isso. Porque eu ainda não sei se tudo é possível, será um grande projeto se tudo correr bem! Algo que eu nunca fiz antes 🙂

Dutch composer and multi-instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen is considered today a true “pope” of the European prog and metal, mainly on board of his main project, Ayreon, his “mothership” as he had stated himself in the interview that you will be able to read more about below.

In the CD / DVD review of the show “Best of Ayreon Live“, I have compared him to the illustrious Quincy Jones, calling him “The Quincy Jones of the European Metal”, for being able to gather around him the biggest names in progressive rock and European metal of yesterday and today, which made him flattered.

He is about to throw another show in his career, the Electric Cast Live, in performances that will take place at the 013 Poppodium in Tilburg, Netherlands, on September 13th,14th and 15th of 2019, and in the night of the 15th, there will be a “double round”, with two shows in a row.

The host, Arjen Lucassen, a true Dutch gentleman, with all his humbleness, had given an exclusive interview, which you can read in Portuguese and English on the lines below.

First of all, thank you for granting this interview for the Confraria Floydstock. It’s our honor to interview you.

My pleasure.

1 – On our first contact, you said that the ‘Floyd’ (after André Floyd) was the key for convincing you to grant this interview (laughs).

Oh yes, absolutely!

In your album “Strange Hobby”, you play Pink Floyd’s first two hits: “Arnold Layne” and “See Emily Play”, both  by Syd Barrett. How big is Barrett and the Pink Floyd’s influence on your career?

Immense! Besides the Beatles, Floyd is my biggest influence and inspiration. Hmm.. sometimes maybe even a bit too obvious, haha! I also covered “Welcome to the Machine” on my solo album ‘Lost in the New Real’.

2 – How did the idea of setting up the Ayreon projects born?

I always wanted to do a rock opera, every since I heard “JC Superstar” and “Tommy” as a kid. I love music with a story that adds an extra dimension. I was also tired of touring the world with various rock bands, and making a rock opera enabled to concentrate on working in the studio without having to play live. I never even dared to imagine that it would be so successful!

Which likenesses and dissimilarities does it have between the other projects of yours, such as Ambeon and Star One, could you highlight?

Ayreon is the mothership. It contains all the styles of music that I like, there are practically no limits. But when I do a side-project I limit myself to one of these styles only. Like with Star One, I concentrate on the metal side of Ayreon, with Gentle Storm I concentrate on the folk side and with Ambeon I concentrate on the atmospheric side of Ayreon.

3 – In our review of the show “Ayreon Universe: Best of Ayreon Live“, I’ve made an analogy between you and the great musical producer of the 70s and 80s, Quincy Jones, who had the great virtue of being able to work along with a wide range of leading music artists including gathering them together.

Wow… thanks for the big compliment! Quincy Jones is a legend of course.

You’ve been doing this constantly since the beginning of your album releases, successfully inviting heavyweight names from today’s and yesterday’s European metal and prog, such as Bruce Dickinson, Thijs van Leer, Anneke van Giersbergen, Floor Jansen, Simone Simons, etc.
What is it like to be the “Quincy Jones of European Metal”, dealing with so many different artists, schedules and egos and always being able to book them?

The logistical side of this is awful, I hate doing that! But… once the artist is in my studio, it’s all been worth it 🙂 It’s a big honor and compliment for me that these amazing musicians take the time to work with me. 

4 – Marcela Bovio mentioned, in an interview with the Confraria Floydstock, how incredible it was to take part in the show “Best of Ayreon Live“. You’ve been working together since the beginning of the band Stream of Passion in 2004. How did you get together on a professional basis?

For the “Human Equation” album I set up a contest where an unknown fan could sing on my album. Out of 200 singers I chose Marcela. When we recorded together this was such a great experience, that I decided to make a whole album with her. Originally it was meant to be a solo album for her, but it slowly grew into a full band: Stream of Passion. Since then I’ve worked with her a lot, and I will continue doing so!

5 – How was the process of the show “Best of Ayreon Live“, from the seed of your initial idea to the last applause and the sense of an accomplished mission, with everything being a huge success? Were there too many obstacles in the way? Which were the bigger ones?

We started working on this no less than two years in advance. Mainly to avoid these obstacles, and slowly solve them over time. Basically Joost van den Broek (the keyboardist) made all of this become a reality, without him there wouldn’t have been a show. I mainly arranged the music and singers side of it all, and Joost the logistical and technical side. 

6 – On the album “The Theory of Everything” (2013), you were bestowed the “gift” of working on the same album with two keyboard wizards in prog rock history, Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson, besides the still wiz guitarist Steve Hackett, ex-Genesis and John Wetton (Asia, King Crimson). What can you tell from such an experience?

Of course it’s a big dream come true to have members of the Big Prog Four: ELP, Yes, Genesis and King Crimson… on the same album! If you would have told me this when I was a kid, listening to their music, I would have laughed at you… very hard!

7 – On the upcoming show “Electric Castle Live“, singer Dianne van Giersbergen, who is confirmed in the cast, told the Confraria Floydstock that her invitation was due to the fact that you have loved the EP “Chapter 1: Anne Boleyn” , from Ex-Libris. Tell us about it. …

Dianne is an amazing singer, very powerful. I saw her live once with a lot of other singers, and she blew them all away! And me too 🙂 She is also a very nice lady, which is always very important for me.

8 – Are there more confirmed names for this show or other possible ones that you can tell us in advance?

9 – Can we expect Ayreon concerts outside Holland, maybe an European tour or even one crossing the Atlantic?

No, that is not an option. Sorry all! I am a total recluse and I don’t tour or even travel. It would also be financially and logistically impossible, the Ayreon crew is a cast of about a 100 people. 

10 – As for the future, do you have any project already planned or in progress to tell us?

Oh yes! But sorry, it’s too soon to talk about it. Because I still don’t know if it’s all possible, it will be a huge project if all goes well! Something I’ve never done before 🙂
