Prestes a lançar com sua banda de metal sinfônico com toques de prog, Against Myself, seu terceiro álbum intitulado “Unity“, que chegará no dia 11 de fevereiro próximo, via On Fire Records,cujo o primeiro single, “Heros’s Soul” você pode conferir no player logo abaixo, a frontwoman espanhola Irene Villegas, gentilmente concordara em conversar com a Confraria Floydstock.

Muito obrigado, é um prazer.
1 – Conte-nos como você começou a se interessar por música e isso se tornou parte de sua vida.
Eu realmente não sei quando comecei a me interessar por música, tem sido uma paixão desde que nasci. Aos 5 anos eu já cantava sem parar todas as músicas da Disney na sala de estar. Quando eu tinha 9 anos, comecei a cantar em um coral e comecei a receber aulas de canto e música. Aos 15 anos, Against Myself chegou e eu não parei de aprender e compor músicas desde aquele momento.
2 – Baseado no som de sua banda, Against Myself, como os elementos Metal, Prog e Sinfônico cativaram você pela primeira vez?
Eu sou um dos fundadores da banda. No começo, Against Myself não soava como nada disso, mas à medida que crescemos, estávamos aprendendo e depositando nossos próprios gostos, que tomou essa forma. Na verdade, é o lado bom do Against Myself: por exemplo, eu amo metalcore e música da Disney, e isso combina com as preferências dos meus colegas, que vão desde trilhas sonoras, jazz a puro metal. Portanto, em nossa nova música, você pode encontrar uma fusão com nossa própria gravadora.
3 – Como foi a criação do Against Myself?
Nós ainda éramos crianças. Eu tinha 15 anos e ninguém ultrapassava a idade legal. Nós éramos todos da mesma cidade. Eu estava procurando por um grupo e Charly (Carretón, baterista) queria montar uma banda com vocal feminino. Nós conversamos, tentamos e tudo começou. No início, tínhamos um estilo rock-metal alternativo e tivemos dificuldade em encontrar o nome. Mas passando horas juntos tudo estava fluindo.
4 – Seus dois primeiros álbuns, “Sky Ashes” e “Odyssey to Reflexion“, foram notoriamente trabalhados em arranjos, com longas canções como “Diary of Tears” e “When Words Kill“. Podemos esperar músicas longas como essa no próximo álbum “Unity”, que chegará em fevereiro?
Sim. De fato, há uma música chamada “Oniros” (que é a favorita de toda a banda) que dura exatamente 15 minutos, 15 segundos e 151 milésimos de segundo. Quando você cria algo, você quer contar uma história, transmitir alguns sentimentos … você precisa de tudo para se encaixar, tudo tem um significado e se certificar de que o que você tem em sua cabeça e coração é bem compreendido. E, claro, às vezes isso requer alguns minutos extras.
5 – Ainda sobre “Unity“, qual a grande singularidade deste álbum comparado aos dois anteriores?
Against Myself teve dificuldade em encontrar um grupo de pessoas que realmente amavam o projeto. Agora somos as pessoas perfeitas e, de fato, o álbum é chamado de “Unity” por causa disso. A música dentro de “Unity” não seria o que é se não fossemos as pessoas que somos agora. Misturando nossas influências, aprendizado, amor e paixão, criamos um álbum de metal sinfônico, com toques progressivos, mas acima de tudo com muita magia. Há um grande salto de qualidade em relação a “Odyssey to Reflexion” e “Sky Ashes”. É um álbum que marca um antes e um depois na história do Against Myself.
6 – Temos três novatos na formação da banda neste novo trabalho, o guitarrista Sergio Culebras, Carlos Alcalde, o tecladista e o baixista Raúl Plaza. Como eles se encaixaram no processo criativo do álbum?
Eles se encaixam perfeitamente desde a primeira vez com a gente e todos juntos são muito felizes. Nós escrevemos toda a música em perfeita harmonia. Cada um de nós tem suas próprias influências, nós misturamos e o resultado de “Unity” é fantástico para nós.
7 – Há músicas de sua autoria ou co-autores em “Unity”? Como você se envolveu no processo criativo?
Todos nós somos os autores de “Unity”. Quando compomos as músicas, cada uma tem um papel, no meu caso escrevo letras e melodias vocais.
8 – A banda já anunciou shows para o lançamento do próximo álbum. Qual é a extensão e expectativa dessa turnê?
Estamos trabalhando na tour. Anunciaremos a primeira etapa em breve.
9 – Podemos ter quem sabe o Against Myself do outro lado do Oceano Atlântico e vindo tocar aqui no Brasil, por exemplo?
Nós temos uma grande multidão de fãs aí no Brasil, então quem sabe! Nós amaremos ir até aí!
10 – Sobre o futuro da banda. Já existem planos? Você já pensou em algo como gravar ou tocar ao vivo com uma orquestra? (Isso é mais uma sugestão do que uma pergunta).
Na verdade, é um sonho que sempre tivemos. Ainda não podemos trabalhar nisso, mas esperamos que isso aconteça em um futuro não muito distante.
11- Por fim, a crescente participação feminina no rock e metal, hoje felizmente já é mais do que uma realidade. Como você vê e sente nesse contexto?
Sim, está crescendo e isso é ótimo. Mas, como em muitos outros pontos, as mulheres são criticadas e analisadas mais do que os homens em geral. Recentemente, vi que uma revista colocou Sharon den Adel na capa com o título “Metal Mama”. A própria Sharon reclamou que muitos outros músicos do sexo masculino são pais e ninguém do meio havia dedicado uma capa para chamá-lo de “Metal Papa”. Esse é um exemplo muito pequeno de tudo o que resta a ser feito, mas estamos aí.

First of all, thank you very much for giving us this interview.
Thanks a lot, it’s a pleasure.
1 – Tell us how you started to get interested in music and it became part of your life.
I don’t really know when I started to get interested in music, it has been a passion since I was born. At 5 I already sang non-stop all Disney songs in the living room. When I was 9 years old I started to sing in a choir and then I started to receive singing and music lessons. At 15, Against Myself arrived and I haven’t stopped learning and composing music since that moment.
2 – Based on the sound of his band, Against Myself, as the Metal, Prog and Symphonic elements captivated you for the first time?
I’m one of the founders of the band. At the beginning, Against Myself didn’t sound like any of that, but as we grew up, we were learning and depositing our own tastes, it took that form. In fact, it’s the good thing about Against Myself: for example, I love metalcore and Disney music, and that mixes with the preferences of my colleagues, which range from soundtracks, jazz to pure metal. Therefore, in our new music you can find a fusion with our own label.
3 – How was the creation of Against Myself?
We were still children. I was 15 years old and nobody was over the legal age. We were all from the same town. I was looking for a group and Charly wanted to set up a female fronted band. We talked, we tried and everything started. At the beginning, we had an alternative rock-metal style and we had a hard time finding the name. But by spending hours together everything was flowing.
4 – His first two albums, “Sky Ashes” and “Odyssey to Reflexion” were notoriously crafted in arrangements, with long songs such as “Diary of Tears” “When Words Kill”. Can we expect long songs like this on the next album “Unity”, which will arrive in February?
Yes. In fact, there is a song called “Oniros” (which is the favorite one of the whole band) that lasts exactly 15 minutes, 15 seconds and 151 thousandth of a second. When you create something, you want to tell a story, convey some feelings… you need everything to fit, everything has a meaning and make sure that what you have in your head and heart is well understood. And of course, sometimes that requires some extra minutes.
5 – Still about “Unity”, what is the great singularity of this album compared to the previous two?
Against Myself has had a hard time finding a group of people who really loved the project. Now we are the perfect people, and in fact, the album is called “Unity” because of that. The music inside “Unity” wouldn’t be what it is if we weren’t the people we are now. Mixing our influences, learning, love and passion, we have made a symphonic metal album, with progressive strokes, but above all with a lot of magic. There is a big quality jump regarding “Odyssey to Reflexion” and “Sky Ashes”. It’s an album that marks a before and after in the Against Myself’s history.
6 – We have three newcomers in the formation of the band in this new work, the guitarist Sergio Culebras, Carlos Alcalde, the keyboardist and the bass player Raúl Plaza. How did they fit into the creative process of the album?
They fit perfectly since the first time with us and all together are very happy. We write all the music in a perfect harmony. Each one of us has his own influences, we’ve mixed it and the result of “UNITY” is fantastic for us.
7 – Are there songs of your own or co-authors in “Unity”? How did you get involved in the creative process?
All of us are the authors of “Unity”. When we compose the songs, each one has a role, in my case, I write lyrics and vocal melodies.
8 – The band has already announced concerts for the release of the next album. What is the extent and expectation of this tour?
We’re working on the tour. We will announce the first leg soon.
9 – Can we have who knows Against Myself across the Atlantic Ocean and come to play here in Brazil, for example?
We have a huge crowd of fans there in Brazil, so who knows! We will love to go there!
10 – About the future of the band. Are there plans already? Have you thought of anything like recording or performing live with an orchestra? (This is more a suggestion than a question).
In fact, it’s a dream we’ve always had. We can’t work on it yet, but hopefully it will happen in the not too distant future.
11 – Finally, the growing female participation in rock and metal, today fortunately already more than a reality. how do you see and feel in that context?
Yes, it’s growing and that’s so great. But as in many other points, women are criticized and analyzed more than men in general. Recently, I saw that a magazine put Sharon den Adel on the cover with the title “Metal Mama”. Sharon herself complained that many other male musicians are parents and no medium had dedicated a cover to call him “Metal Papa”. That’s a very small example of all that remains to be done, but we are in it.
